MOUNT KISCO

Q Restaurant and Bar, the clean-cut barbecue restaurant that brought applewood-smoked St. Louis-style ribs to a grateful downtown Port Chester, has a new location, in Mount Kisco. With its fresh décor, cool efficiency and fun graphics, Q is the kind of place that appeals to all ages and persuasions. Its cheerful trademark orange, which brings to mind nasturtiums or gladiolas, is boldly deployed — in the curvy plastic chairs, the takeout menu and on the logo trucker hats available for sale. Arch portraits of Tonto and the Lone Ranger stand sentinel in the bar, just beyond the split-rail fence that cordons off the dining area. Prices bring welcome relief in these hard times.

Ribs are king, but the excellent Texas brisket, pulled pork and barbecue chicken wings come nipping at their heels. Sides include hickory-pit baked beans, good eggy potato salad, textbook coleslaw seasoned with a pinch of celery seed, and collard greens. (Entree portions, $13 to $26.95, come with two sides and cornbread.) Mexican-style “Q-Corn” — an ear of grilled corn blanketed with cotija cheese — costs an extra $3.25; biscuits with maple butter are $4.95. If you’re feeling flush, you can order a jumbo shrimp cocktail or a pile of “peel-n-eat” shrimp (market price).

Children 12 and under eat free if an adult orders an entree. The crispy Southern fried chicken fingers will awe children who all their lives have eaten soggy variations. Q also caters to little ones with a “sticky fingers station” — a wall-mounted sink flanked by soap and paper-towel dispensers — and with sweet-tart lemonade served in Mason jars and root beer floats. (For grownups, there are boutique bourbons and swell beers.)

Don’t leave without ordering a big slice of freshly baked pie ($4.50) or old-fashioned layer cake ($5); if you’re full, take one home.
